A gender imbalance in China has led to a trafficking crisis involving hundreds of women. A report released by Human Rights Watch revieled that authorities on both sides of the border have been unsuccessful in stopping hundreds of women from being trafficked from Myanmar to China. The woman are lured across the border after being promised jobs, instead they are sold for $3,000 to $13,000. Many of the victims report that they were locked up, raped and forced to bear the children of their captors. The Myanmar government reported 226 cases of trafficking in 2017, but it is likely that that number is much higher.
